Walking Hector; The Dark Secrets of Families

Walking HectorA park triggers a lifetime of memories; Two cousins’ true feelings.

From The Dark Secrets of Families:

“What are you smiling at?” asked Aunt Cecilia. Helen just shook her head and looked out the window into the tranquil garden. A bicyclist slowly sailed past, knees spread wide, on an old rattletrap bike, without gears, rusting, too small for the rider. An intruder in the garden. “Would you look at that?” cried Aunt Cecilia. “There he is after all.” Mungo. Speechless in delight, Helen watched him turn the corner and sail past the other window, light flashing off his steel-rimmed glasses, his short hair feathering back over his bald spot. He glanced quickly in the window as he passed. There she is all right, Mungo thought. Just like she said. Tea with Mom in the sunroom. Thinks she can surprise me at work, does she? Comes up behind me and puts her arms around me, her soft face against mine. At work. Practically kisses me. But doesn’t. I’ll show her I can handle it. He hopped off the bike without stopping and gave it a push which sent it leaning against the house. Not bad. The old bike still goes. Now inside for Mom’s food, and Helen.
